Phillies Player OdĂşbel Herrera Suspended For Regular Season And Post Season

Philadelphia Phillies v. Washington Nationals

Major League Baseball has suspended Philadelphia Phillies center fielder OdĂşbel Herrera for the remainder of the regular season the postseason for violating the Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy,

Herrera was arrested for assault by police in Atlantic City, New Jersey on May 27. When officers arrived to the Golden Nugget they reported that his girlfriend, Melany Martinez-Angulo, "had visible signs of injury to her arms and neck."

A judge dropped the case on Wednesday (July 3) after Martinez-Angulo declined to press charges.

"Having reviewed all of the available evidence, I have concluded that Mr. Herrera violated the Policy and should be subject to discipline in the form of an unpaid suspension that will cover the remainder of the 2019 season," MLB Commissioner Robert Manfred said in a statement.

The Phillies also released a statement saying they support the leagues' decision.

"All instances of domestic violence and abuse are abhorrent and unacceptable, and we unequivocally support Baseball's collective efforts to prevent domestic abuse," the team said. "We are encouraged by OdĂşbel's acceptance of his discipline as an indication of his willingness to learn from this and change his behavior appropriately."
